THREE SHORT PROJECTS
Untitled (Jan 3 - Feb 10, 2022)
Black dog (Feb 18 - Mar 12, 2022)
While I Was Sleeping (May 17 - June 7, 2022)
As I look at the scope and geography of my work over the past 15 years I see that the photos are being made closer to my home. Not only that, they are more personal as well.
In the case of these three projects, Untitled was shot in my bedroom, Black Dog mostly in my back yard, and While I Was Sleeping in my neighbourhood.
They were each completed in about a month and the sequences are short and straightforward. This is a change from the two or three years I typically spend on projects, and the multidimensional edits I’d strive for.
Untitled is a series of photos of me, along with some details of my bedroom wall. I began Untitled during the 5th wave of the pandemic, yet another lockdown, more isolation.
Black dog came about almost immediately after I completed Untitled. Cindy and I had just rescued two dogs from Russia. One of them, Ellie, is a black dog. Black dog is a metaphor for melancholy or depression. Shortly after we adopted Tim and Ellie, Russia invaded Ukraine and the western world lurched from “COVID is over” (yuk, yuk) to “Welcome to WW III”.
For While I Was Sleeping, I bought the cheapest trail camera I could find. It's triggered by motion and sometimes takes pictures for no reason at all. I'd put the camera somewhere near my house just before I went to bed and retrieved it the next morning. The camera took these photos by itself, while I was sleeping.
