WHAT IT TAKES

First on Saturday, and then on Monday, I heard fotografers talk. Louie Palu
and Chris Armade.

Both said they had quit their jobs to pursue their passion. In Louie’s case
he quit being a staff fotog so he could go to Afghanistan to do his thing.
Chris quit his Wall Street job to do his thing. . . photographing addicts and
sex workers in Hunt’s Point, Bronx, N.Y.C.

What I find interesting about these 2 quitting jobs with paychecks to do
jobs with no paychecks (except for whatever money they could hustle) is,
the “jobs” they went to provided so much more than money can buy, they
provided worth and dignity and contribution to things important. Not to
mention incredible excitement.

Anyway. . . .

I won’t get in to the details of what Chris talked about, you really have to be
there to get the full brunt of what any talk’s about. But I will mention that, if
you were there you could feel the powerful vibrations of engagement and
anger that rolled off him.

The other thing that really struck me was how similar his stories, insights
and feelings were to mine; how, when you meet and try to give a voice to
these marginalized people, or just to show them in a reasonable light, there
are certain things that become so obvious.

All this talk about the “Future of Fotografy” fades away when the practitioner
includes risk and involvement in their practice. That will always stand out, no
matter what.

PRESS CHECK

LIVE THOUGH THIS went on the press last Thursday.

Well, the cover and booklet got printed Tuesday, but those were pretty
straight-up and no press check was required.

But at 10:15 Thursday morn I made my way down to Lowe-Martin, where
LTT was getting loaded onto their 10 color press. Now, before you get too,
too excited, it’s not a 10 color book, it’s a 4 color book. But by putting it on
the 10 color they could print both sides of each signature at once.

The amount of control you have on these monster presses is quite amazing.
You can regulate the color in 2 inch strips as the paper is fed through the
thing. Working with Andy, the pressman, we fine tuned each of the 5 signatures.
I arrived at 10:15 and we were done at 7:30.

I know I go on about this ad nauseum, but all of you out there who are planning
on picking up a copy, now’s the time to do it.
