WEB SURFING & NAVEL GAZING
CONTACT
The CONTACT Photography Festival, the “largest foto fest on the planet”,
has just made their website live.
I suggest checking it out, its full of info about the more than 200 foto
shows happening in Toronto, May of this year.
There’s also a link to a schedule of films on fotografy that TVO will
be airing that same month. Looks like there’s going to be some
good ones. I’ll be watching the ones on Sally Mann, A. Leibovitz,
Helmut Newton and Shelby Lee Adams, for sure.
Go here for the website.
And, further to CONTACT…..I’m printing up a storm, getting ready for
my (feature) show at PIKTO.

WEB SURFING & NAVEL GAZING
I’ve been web surfing and navel gazing a bit of late.
There are so many fotos on the web to look at and so many pieces
of lint in my belly button to consider.
What follows are a few random thoughts in no particular order:
1/ I’m attracted to craaaazy, loose fotos and sometimes wish my
own could be like that. The grass is always greener…….right? I’ve
come to the conclusion, though, that I am what I am. Even though
I put effort into evolving and refining my work I realize that I’ll
always have to be true to my core. I’m not a wild and crazy guy
(contrary to popular opinion), I like structure and control. That’s
that.
2/ I’m attracted to cold, austere formal shots. Problem is, I also
don’t like those kinds of images. They interest me in that they
are, what seems to be, a dispassionate take that define how that
particular fotografer sees and what they think is interesting.
Problem for me is, I like bits of emotion to seep into my pix.
Sure, I like structure (see 1/ above), but for me, structure
without “passion” is essentially form without content.
3/ Much (most?) photography is boring. I think that taking
fotos is WAY more interesting than looking at them. Just
like participating in life is more interesting than, say,
watching television.
4/ The weather’s swell, what am I doing inside?
PUSH/PULL
The 3rd year students at SPAO put out a magazine every year: PUSH/PULL.
The launch party is April 10th at Gallery La Petite Mort.
