NOT USER

I know that I’ve been talking a lot about USER here on drool
these days. (I’m kind of in the middle of USER production and,
as such, a little bit obsessed with it. That’s how I roll, baby.)

This week, though, not a USER shot or thought (except this,
and, well…those pix on the poster below) in site/sight.

FESTIVAL X (out of bounds)

The Ottawa foto fest, after running 2 consecutive years, has
decided to become a thing that happens every second year.

As a stopgap, the festival has decided to run a bit of a stripped
down, mini program this year. They’re calling it: “Festival X out
of bounds”.

Part of the programming is a panel discussion on “the state of
contemporary photographic portraiture”.

panel-discussion

That’s a panel discussion moderated by Dr Lilly Koltun (Director
of The Portrait Gallery of Canada), with panelists Michael Schreier
(associate professor in the Visual Arts Department at the University
of Ottawa) and yours truly (high school drop out).

Happens this coming Wednesday at SPAO. Seven to nine p.m.

If you’re at all interested go here for info.

APRIL + ERIK

Also next week, my exhibition APRIL + ERIK opens.

Been working away (in between commercial work), doing the post
and printing the show.

Here’s the statement:

APRIL + ERIK: LOVE SHOTS

April and Erik invited me and my camera into their bedroom.

As usual, there was no plan. I just wanted to see what would
happen, what the photographs would look like.

I had no expectations. Even though my photography is very
much about directing, I’ve learned that situations and dynamics
always take on a life of their own. For me, photography is still
about discovery.

I thought I’d be photographing sex. What I discovered was love.
Not the holding-hands-while-walking-into-the-sunset kind of
love.

April and Erik’s love is more real than that.

Show opens Friday, September 18th. Seven in the evening. La Petite
Mort Gallery
. Special guests: April and Erik.

VERVE PHOTO

A big thanks to Geoffrey Hiller, over at Verve Photo, for
the feature on yours truly.

Of all the shots of mine he could choose from, he picked
one from Alabama.

So, those of you interested in “a new breed of documentary
photographer”, head on over to here. (Verve is a documentary
foto blog that features a new photographer ever second day,
so there’s lots to look at.)

FURTHER TO ALZHEIMER’S

Couple of weeks ago I posted the shot I took of Guy Berube’s
mom, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. This shot was one of a
few Guy commissioned from Ottawa photographers.

Guy struggled long and hard about whether to display these
photos. After all…..his mom really had no say.

You should know that over the years he’s raised thousands
and thousands of dollars, all of which go directly to the facility
that supports and treats his mother.

As well, he came to the conclusion that showing the face of this
disease is not wrong. He came to the conclusion that too often
people who suffer from Alzheimer’s are just tucked away, never
to be seen.

And, finally, before we get to the photos….. no one who has seen
Guy with his mother would question his motives in doing this photo
project. The most obvious thing in the world is the love and respect
he has for her.
