COVER STORY
ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME……
You ever notice that, as you go thru life, there are stretches of time
where nothing seems to be happening?
I mean…..your life goes on, but it all seems so familiar that nothing
really makes an impression.
Then……
All hell breaks loose. A whole bunch of news, and new sensations
(or, at least, sensations that somehow penetrate you) all spring forth
at once.
Well, this week has been kind of like that for me, me, me……
I’ll try not to bore you with too much detail and, in fact, one of these
me-related things might even be interesting from a working photog
point of view (see: Cover Story, below).
But, since all this stuff has happened to me this week I thought I’d
indulge myself (What! Me indulge myself?) and just drool them out.
I thought about also posting a link to some other photographer
who’s work I like, am inspired by, just to flesh the post out, but
then thought: FUCKIT!!!, this can just be what it is. So, bear with
me or bounce over to check your Twitter and Facebook updates.
AND….this post ends with a very funny cartoon.
COVER STORY
It’s always swell to get a cover.
Problem is, covers have their own set of rules. You have to compose
the shot with enough wiggle room for the magazine’s title and all the
copy and stuff that has to go on a cover.
But I’ll take ‘em when I can get ‘em, yes-sir-ee.
This month I had the cover of Report on Business magazine. This one
was fraught with all kinds of difficulties, mostly because the subject,
Julie Dickson, didn’t want to be on the cover.
The art department at the mag went thru a dozen or so iterations, trying
to find a solution to this problem.
Here are a few that they tried:

To see some of the other versions, and to read the rationale behind why
they didn’t make the cut, go here and click on “Anatomy of a Cover” in
the Multimedia Centre. Pretty interesting stuff, if you ask me.
Here’s the cover that was printed:

And, here are the opener and turn from the article. Now you know
what Julie Dickson looks like.

NATIONAL MAGAZINE AWARDS
Once more, I got to giggle.
Late Tuesday nite I got an e-mail from a friend congratulating me on
my National Magazine Award nomination. It was news to me.
Like I keep saying……if you believe them when they like you you must
believe them when they don’t. So my policy is to giggle a little bit and
then just get on with what I’m doing.
My nomination was for Portrait Photography for this shot I did for Report
on Business magazine, of class action lawyer Tony Merchant……

I’m in with a bunch of very talented shooters so winning, as always,
is a long shot. But, really, I never take photos to win…..I take them
because I love taking them (and it pays the mortgage).
Yes.
20 QUESTIONS
I’m in The Sunday Citizen today. A thing called 20 QUESTIONS.
Here’s an e-mail from Michelle Wilson about it:
“I literally screamed when I saw the front
of the paper today. Scared the shit out of
the girl serving me coffee. I’m reading it
now, very funny, very you.”
Here’s the pic they ran:

And here’s an excerpt:
1. When you were a youngster, what did you
want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a doctor or an artist, and the
reason was so that I could see naked ladies.
I guess the third thing I could have been was
a pervert, but I actually never aspired to be a
pervert.
But as a photographer, you can see naked ladies.
Yeah, but mostly I see dressed businessmen, and
that suits me fine because I don’t particularly want
to see many businessmen naked.
You can read the whole thing here.
SHOW
I’ve been busy editing, post producing, printing and framing for my
show, which opens at La Petite Mort Gallery on May first (7 to 10).
The show runs until May 31st, at which point it will travel Montreal,
where it will be seen at IPS Gallery.

Getting ready for showtime
I’ve got no problem showing you shots of the show images here.
These suckers are printed BIG from 4 x 5 negatives. You haven’t
really seen them until you’ve seen the actual prints.
I hope you can make it down to La Petite Mort to check ‘em out.
