LAST POST (until 2009)
That’s right kids, drool is taking a well deserved rest.
But don’t worry, we’ll be back Sunday January 4, 2009, if the world’s
still here. I’m betting it will be.
In the meantime……this is one of those days (weeks) when I’ve got
nothing. Nothing to show you, nothing to say. But that’s never stopped
me before, from showing and saying. (Hey! That’s kinda like my job.
There are certain days when I’ve got a shoot but feel empty. My job
description, besides running my office, writing quotes, editing, post
production, meetings and so on and so forth, is about being creative
on demand. Making something from nothing. No matter what.)
Anyway…..
If you’re a regular reader you know I’m a big believer in process. I
believe that if something turns out perfect the first time you try, well,
where do you go from there? I think that mistakes are one of the fun
(and necessary) bits of life. I also believe the zen dudes when they
say that it’s the imperfections that make things interesting. And, if
you’re bored, well, you just have to define a more difficult problem
for yourself.
In case you didn’t know here, what I’m doing is, I’m just making this
up as I go along, seeing what will happen if I just start. Of course,
later on I’ll review, edit and refine so you don’t have to wade thru
too much stream-of-consciousness bullcrap. (I do notice, though,
that when I do this - fall back on instinct - certain similar themes
come forward. I can live with that. What I can’t live with is stasis.)
Anyway……
When I’m stuck, working, I do much the same thing. If I don’t know
where to start I’ll look for some mark on the ground and just ask my
subject to stand on it. From there, we proceed. Looking, eliminating
(because that’s part of what photography is…..you start with the whole
world and eliminate all the things you don’t need) and deciding. At least
that’s a start, and it’s from starts that things happen, it’s from starts that
decisions are arrived at.
So come on everybody, let’s start.
The end.
