SOW + REVIEW + CAMERA

SOW

This pig is big! That’s a 9 foot wide backdrop she’s standing on.

The pig wrangler used food to get her into position. She stayed there for about 5 frames
then turned and destroyed the backdrop. There was no talking to her. She did what she
wanted. I love pork.

I also love working with animals (and remember, humans are animals too).
Their unpredictability, their personalities, their quirks can make the shoot
more difficult, but in my book difficult most often equals interesting.

REVIEW

Following is a review that appeared in the most recent Vie des Arts magazine.
That’s a glossy fine art quarterly. (Thank you Lori Beaman for your insights.)
I had to read it twice (maybe 3 times) to understand it. I can be simple. But it’s
always interesting to read what others have to say about my personal work.

Really, though, the only aim I ever really have when I set out to do personal work
is to take pictures and try to learn a thing or two. Well, that and to subtract some
comfort from my life. You see, I have this theory that comfort turns your groove
into a rut, comfort just fortifies the little boxes we all make for ourselves.

I love comfort but it’s so boring. I think that, every so often, it’s necessary to
live a little.

CAMERA

I just bought a new camera from eBay.

Well, not really new, this thing (a German beauty) was made the same year
as me- 1954.

I can hardly wait to get it, to start using it. It’ll make me work in new (and
for me, uncomfortable) ways.
