RANT + ME, ME, ME
Photography is deceptive.
It’s easy, with a camera, to get an image. It’s very difficult, though, to produce
images that define you. Unless, of course, you’re satisfied with being defined by
sunsets, cute puppies (are there any other kind?), raking light on a weathered
tree, cliché touristy pix, stuff like that.
But to consistently produce images that represent you, that add up, that define
your intelligence…..that’s difficult. (Of course it’s entirely possible that you have
no interest in “defining” yourself with a camera. Fine, I’m not talking to you.)
Digital cameras and the Interweb have been instrumental in the great democratization
of image production and distribution…..everyone’s a photographer these days it would
seem. It’s easy, right? But, as the play write Henrik Ibsen says: “The majority is always
wrong”. Just because something is easy doesn’t mean it’s good. In fact, I’d say that while
easy has it’s place, struggle, thought, work and risk are way more interesting.
I don’t want to hold myself up here as a paragon of great photography, original ideas
or a guru or something. No way. I do know, though, that it’s the struggle that keeps
me feeling. Sure, I give up lots of times…..you’ve got to pick your fights. But it’s the
struggle and the work and the risk and the thought that seem, to me, like living.
Don’t settle.
